How to create an Auto load balancing VMS board

Create messaging for VMS boards that direct road users towards the fastest route, or on a particular route until a time limit is breached.

Updated over a week ago

This guide focuses on creating messaging on your VMS for balancing routes depending on which route has the shortest journey time.

Select Automated load balancing

Once your board has been created, given a name and connection to your board is complete (see How to set up a VMS board), select the Auto load balancing tab within the Messaging type step.

1. Select the routes you would like to balance between.

This is done by clicking on the Add routes button. This will open up a route selection screen.

To select routes on the map, click on the routes and click the check box to add your route to your selection. Alternatively, you can select routes from the input below the map.

2. Select the type of load balancing.

There are two types of Automated load balancing that you can choose from.

  1. Fastest route
This will update your messaging to direct road users to the fastest potential route.

  2. Alternate route
This allows you to select a time limit for a selected route. When this time limit is breached the message will change

Fastest route load balancing

You will now see pre-populated messages based on the number of routes you have selected.

Multiple frames can be added to each message. The time between frames is 3 seconds.

Alternate route balancing

Like Fastest route load balancing, messages will be pre-populated based on the routes you have selected.

Default message

The difference here is that you have a default route pre-selected in which a journey time limit is set. This is shown in the drop-down text within the default message container.

You can change the selected default route by clicking on the drop-down.

You also change the limit at which this message will change by editing the number on the right-hand side.

Alternate message

An alternate message will be displayed when the selected journey time limit for your default message has been breached.

If you have multiple alternate routes being measured, the message for the route with the shortest journey time will be displayed.

If you require help with setting up your messaging, tap the green button in the bottom right corner of this page.
