Troubleshooting Smart VMS

If you are using Mooven's Smart VMS and encounter a problem, this article provides useful guidance on solving issues

Updated over a week ago

Overview

Mooven smart VMS functionality enables users to provide live and dynamic content to mobile variable message signs (also known as portable changeable message signs; VMS / CMS boards).

Three components need to come together:

  • Data inputs for messaging (i.e. live journey time monitoring)

  • Messaging rules (i.e. when the boards are configured to run and with what messages)

  • A connection with the VMS/CMS board (i.e. the data integration and permissions to update the board).

Each section below guides troubleshooting Smart VMS issues.

How to troubleshoot a Smart VMS deployment

If you don't have live content showing on the VMS/PCMS board when you believe this should be live:

  1. First, check that your messaging is scheduled and live in Mooven.

  2. Check if you have received any email notifications from mooven@mooven.com that your data collection has been interrupted.

If you can see live information on the VMS/PCMS board but the information is out of date or incorrect:

  1. First, review the messaging rules that have been created in Mooven.

  2. Check if there are any data collection outages for live journey times

  3. Check if someone has applied a manual override in the board's software.

How to check the messaging setup in Mooven

You can view your current VMS boards on the left-hand menu in Mooven associated with the project on which you are running VMS boards.

Check for connection errors

If your VMS boards are live, the legend on the left-hand side of Mooven will show the board name with a full colour legend.

If you select 'more', you will see the full details of the boards you have currently set up and their status.

In the below image, one board is in draft status, two boards are currently live, and one board is live but has a connection issue.

Schedule for a future date

If the board is currently scheduled for a future date or the schedule has ended, you will see the image below against the VMS board.

Journey Time Data Capture Failure

If there is a failure to collect journey time information, all users with edit access to the Mooven project will receive a polling failure notification. The route needs to be updated or a new route created before live journey advice becomes available again.

Board Connection Issues

If you have identified a board connection issue, follow the steps below based on the board manufacturer.

Bartco

For the integration between Mooven and Bartco boards to run successfully, three settings need to be in place:

  1. The board needs to be cross-hired to Mooven, so we can access the board. This is typically done by the hire company sending a request to Bartco to be actioned.

  2. The board needs to be unlocked, which provides the ability to action points two and three.

  3. Automatic programming needs to be enabled.

Checking if the board is cross-hired

Only boards that are cross-hired to Mooven will be available to schedule messaging against. You will receive an error in Mooven if you try to configure messaging to a board that is not cross-hired.

If this occurs, Bartco needs to be contacted to cross-hire the board to Mooven: mooven-bartco-integration@mooven.com

How to unlock the board

If the board is locked, you will see a padlock symbol against the specific board. To unlock the board, right click on the board and select "unlock asset"

Enable automatic programming.

Within Bartco Webstudio, automatic programming will need to be enabled. This is done by right-clicking on the asset on the right side of WebStudio and selecting Enable Automatic Programming.

If the circle icon with an A in the middle is now on (see image below), the API set-up is successful.

If your board has been cross-hired to Mooven, it will now be accessible for Mooven to automatically update on your behalf.

Bartco Contracts:

Data Signs

Contact your Data Signs representative to troubleshoot any connection errors. Mooven does not have access to view Data Signs portal so is unable to help identify issues.
